Mainbreak exceeded all expectations today, producing massive swell in 'all time' conditions for day four of the Margaret River Pro at Surfers Point. While yesterday's conditions saw swell drop over the day and the wind cause havoc, today was a different story altogether. Massive sets were rolling into the headland as soon as there was enough light to see them. Rumours of The Box were circulating but it was decided to stick to Mainbreak. The strong easterly did make conditions testing for those out in the line-up, but it was a treat for spectators as the world's best surfers battled against each other and the waves heat after riveting heat. Highlights were many and varied. The crowd was large in anticipation of heat one, with Kelly Slater going down to Australian Jack Freestone in massive waves that really tested both surfers. One competitor, Michel Bourez, judged the wave size to be ten to fifteen foot. As the heats progressed the wave face cleaned up with a drop in the howling off-shore easterly wind. Heat six was also keenly anticipated as local favourite Jacob Willcox took on John John Florence. Although Willcox caught some excellent waves and performed well, he was outclassed by John John, who looks to be in top form judging by his performance today. In round four he was at it again, convincingly beating Bourez and Coffin with a top wave of 9.7. As we go to schedule this post it's 4:30pm and the comp is still on at Surfer's Point. What an all time day of competition in memorable conditions. One we'll never forget.
